Originally from Manchester Herbert met his wife Ann Ellen whilst she was working in an ammunitions factory in Manchester during World War I. Their return together to her home village of Port Dinorwic and from 1930 ran a small general store, selling haberdashery, newspapers, stationary and packaging. While his wife looked after the shop and accounts, Mr Herbert Pennington started a wholesale stationary business to local shops and businesses. With a suitcase of stationary on the carrier of his bicycle he visited customers in Caernarfon and Bangor. As the business expanded he progressed to a standard 10 car, and then to a small van. He was soon joined in the business by his son William. During World War II Pennington’s shared petrol and transport with Robert’s Meats of Port Dinworwic. Pork pies, sausages and stationary were delivered together to local shops. Since Mr William Pennington retired 18 years ago the company was then taken over by his nephew Mr Derek Rees and his wife Carys at the Old Railway Station, Port Dinorwic. Where they successfully ran the business for 15 years at Old Railway Station before their two sons, Tristan & Stephen took over.
